Mediation for Juvenile Offenders

The CCFM recognizes the importance of juvenile offenders taking responsibility for their actions. Our objective is to help them learn to deal with conflict in a constructive, nonviolent manner. To this end we provide mediation services for juveniles who have come to court and are charged with offences particular violent or property offences vandalism, school fights, theft, truancy, harassment, or even assault.

In these situations, the courts refer the children and their parents to mediation, the children are asked to create their own resolution to the dispute or action they were involved in. Sometimes children agree to take responsibility for their actions by participating in community service, or in paying for or working off payments for damage payments they may cause. In the case of fighting, the youth often arrive at an agreement that controls how they will handle similar situations in the future (e.g. – walking away from fight, contacting an adult, or talking out disputes rather than striking physically).
