Peer Mediation

How Does Peer Mediation Work in the Schools?

  • Peer mediators (team of two) introduce the mediation process, explain the ground rules, and explain their role to the disputants.

  • The Disputants tell their side of the story to the mediators. The goal is to explore all of the underlying facts and feelings pertaining to the problem. The mediators ask many questions with the goal of helping to focus the problems solving process.

  • The mediators ask both the parties to brainstorm about how they might solve the problem. The mediators write down all the ideas, being careful not to judge or give their own opinions.

  • The mediators and the disputants work together to evaluate the brainstorm ideas and develop an agreement using the ideas that are mutually agreeable.

  • The mediators write a contract using the solutions to which both parties agree, and everybody signs it.
